Dentists can reopen, and Greenville Drive-In does

Jun 01, 2020 12:05 am
Newsday reported that Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced May 31 that dentist offices can reopen after weeks closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. "It's wonderful news for patients, but dentist offices will need to understand what it takes to be safe," said Dr. Scott Asnis, CEO of Dental365, which has 48 dental offices in New York and Connecticut. "It is not easy." Dentists are installing air filtration systems, and will wear all sorts of protective equipment. Locally the Greenville Drive-In reopened May 29, screening "Dirty Dancing" and selling out its limited admissions July 30. They are screening "Field of Dreams" next weekend. The Hi-Way Drive-In in Coxsackie reopened the week before. Other local businesses are hoping the Capital Region, including Greene, Columbia, Albany, and Rensselaer counties, will be able to enter Phase Two of the state's reopening process later this week. "If I were a business owner looking to open in any of the next three phases, I would be taking this time to prepare for the things I’ll need to do to operate safely for both my customers and staff," Columbia County Board of Supervisors chair Matt Murell said. "I understand that keeping up with guidance coming down from the state and federal governments’ is a full-time job all by itself, but I think it’s critical that we all do our part to create a safe environment for everyone.” Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin kept insisting all businesses reopen in his county even if the state has not cleared them for Phase Two. "Notice ‘fines of up to’ and “local authorities can...,” McLaughlin wrote on Twitter. "We will not enforce so there goes the ‘local authorities’ part and as for the fines,.... not going to happen." The Columbia Paper reported that, as of May 30, 33 people have died from COVID-19 in the county. That's one more over the weekend, though the report did not give any details. Of the 33 dead in Columbia County, 12 were residents of the Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont and 15 were residents of The Grand at Barnwell in Valatie. Columbia County currently has 126 active cases. Greene County added just one more case this weekend, and has had 18 deaths so far.
