NY SAFE Act largely upheld by federal judge

The Associated Press is reporting a federal judge Tues., Dec. 31, upheld most of New York's new gun control law, rejecting arguments that its bans on large-capacity magazines and the sale of some semi-automatic rifles violate Second Amendment rights. U.S. District Court Judge William Skretny in Buffalo said those provisions are constitutional because they are related to achieving an “important governmental interest” in public safety. He said those two features make guns more lethal. The New York law was adopted following the December 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The suit was filed by the state affiliate of the National Rifle Association, sportsmen's groups, firearms businesses and gun owners.
