Feb 15, 2021 6:00 am

Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics people with comorbidities like cancer, HIV/AIDS and other underlying ailments will soon be able to schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments in New York. The "Am I Eligible" screening website maintained by New York state, updated Sun, Feb. 14, to include new information for people who have qualifying comorbidities. New appointments will also be released on a rolling basis over the coming weeks. As of late afternoon on February 14, appointments are available at state-operated vaccination locations at the Javits Center in Manhattan, the State Fair Expo Center in Syracuse, SUNY Potsdam, Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Polytechnic in Utica and at the Rochester Dome Arena. Vaccination sites statewide so far have administered 2.1 million doses, with 90 percent of those the first of two shots. According to a February 12 press release, Columbia County Department of Health Director Jack Mabb said he strongly encourages people to contact their doctor now for the letter of proof people with comorbidities will need to receive the shot. “Everyone will need a letter,” said Mabb. “Absolutely no one will receive the shot without the proper documentation from their doctor.” The county Department of Health is making plans to schedule a dispensing location for individuals with comorbidities. The state has directed that signups for the vaccine be held on a first-come, first-served basis. Further information will be forthcoming as soon as it is available. Currently, more than 7 million New York residents qualify for the vaccine, but demand has outpaced supply. In related Columbia County news, the county office building at 325 Columbia Street was closed to business Fri., Feb. 12, due to possible COVID-19 exposure. Other than to say a "thorough cleaning" of the building by the facilities workers would be conducted, and that staff was directed to work from home, additional details were not provided. Board of Supervisors Chair Matt Murrell said the building would be open for business as usual, Tue., Feb. 16.
