The Times Union has been named a Newspaper of Distinction by the Journalists Association of New York, the successor organization to the state Associated Press Association. In addition to winning the top honor in its circulation class, the Albany-based Hearst Communications paper also took home 10 first-place awards at an awards ceremony held on October 15, in Saratoga Springs. The Newspaper of Distinction award is judged on the submission of editions for three days over the course of the calendar year. The three reviewed by judges included investigative work such as the months-long examination of a potential structural flaw on the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, coverage of COVID-19 on campus, and "A City Divided," a deep look at the impact of redlining on Albany. The editions also included special sections devoted to Black History Month and the one-year anniversary of the arrival of coronavirus in the Capital Region. The paper's first-place wins ranged from headline writing and photography to arts coverage and the timesunion.com website, which won for best digital presence. "The range of awards won by the newsroom for its 2021 work ... demonstrates the Times Union's rich talent and commitment to journalism with impact and style," editor in chief Casey Seiler said.  Read the full story in the Times Union.
