Local student advances in National Spelling Bee

The Times Union is reporting Lydia Loverin, winner of the Capital Region Spelling Bee, made it to the semifinals of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee. On Wed., May 28, Lydia, a sixth-grade student at Mountain Road School in New Lebanon, successfully spelled "galjoen" (xalˈjʊn) (a type of fish) and "lipophilic" (lī-pah-ˈfi-lik) (able to dissolve in lipids). Lydia is sponsored by the Times Union. She was among 42 of 281 contestants who made it to the next round. The contest in the Washington, D.C., area continues Thursday morning.
