Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics the state Legislature July 22, perfected a bill that would allow drivers to pay traffic fines and fees on installment as a way to prevent them from losing their driver's licenses. The measure was approved by the Assembly this week and previously backed by the state Senate. It now goes to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for his signature. “For many New Yorkers, especially those in rural areas with limited public transportation options, the ability to get to and from work is dependent on the ability to drive,” said Speaker Carl Heastie. “When an individual is unable to get to work, it is more than an inconvenience to the driver – it hurts families, communities and employers.” The legislation would stop the courts from suspending a license if a driver does not pay the penalty owed for traffic violations or if they fail to appear. The court would also be required to offer an installment plan for paying the fine. Read the full story at nystateofpolitics [dot] com.
