Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that a majority of Greene County legislators voted to keep a $1.3 million garage in the budget for the new Greene County jail. On March 18, legislators William Lawrence and Harry Lennon, from Cairo; voted against removing the garage from the budget with Pat Linger of New Baltimore, Ed Bloomer of Athens, Larry Gardner of Hunter, and James Thorington of Windham. In the Finance Committee, Lawrence, Lennon, Gardner, Linger, and Gregory Davis of Greenville, voted to keep the $1.3 million garage in the budget. “I think it is appalling to ask taxpayers to pay for that,” Catskill legislator Matt Luvera said. Legislators have yet to tell the public exactly how much their taxes will be raised to pay for the new structure in Coxsackie, or how much the whole thing will cost. “We should know the operating budget by now,” Catskill Legislator Michael Bulich said.
