Emily De Vito is reporting for WNYT [dot] com the president of New York State United Teachers Andrew Pallotta is urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to make a decision on schools reopening as soon as possible. Cuomo has yet to make an announcement about when, or if elementary, middle, and high school students will be heading back to school in the fall. "Most folks do want to get back to the norm of school as it used to be, but there are priorities that must be in place," said Pallotta. "This is a twofold concern. Health and safety and also the education process." Pallotta said there is nothing better than in-person learning, but he has concerns. Number one, to make sure schools are clean and safe. There are also concerns about having enough PPE for teachers and administrators, how to transport students while having them social distance and how to make sure there is enough room for them in the building if their desks are spaced six feet apart. Regardless of what the guidelines call for, the changes will cost the schools money, Pallotta said. "We know this is going to cost money, we also know everyone wants to be able to bring their students to the bus stop or to school and say I feel good about this school, I feel safe for my child," he said.
