Liz Young is reporting for the Albany Business Review property owners in Schenectady paid the highest effective property tax rate in the Capitol Region last year, according to an analysis by the Empire Center for Public Policy, the fiscally conservative think tank in Albany. The effective tax rate includes taxes paid to the county, town or city, school district and village (where applicable). The town of Catskill was ranked in the top 20 of the Empire Center's list, placing ninth in the region with an effective tax rate of $39.72, and a median home value of $176,600. The tax bill on that median home in Catskill was $7,014 last year. Coxsackie was the only other Greene County location in the top 20, placing 18th in the rankings, with an effective tax rate of $36.62, and a median home value of $155,500. The median tax bill was just under $5,700 last year. Property taxes have received even more attention that usual following the federal tax overhaul that capped the deductibility of state and local taxes at $10,000. The Capital Region had the lowest median effective tax rate of any region in the state. Read the full story at the Albany Business Review.
