William J. Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman the Catskill Village Board is looking into the cost of creating a new zoning map and conducting traffic studies along the U.S. Route 9W corridor. It is believed the currently residential zoning hinders the village's ability to attract new business. The estimated cost of a study focusing on a 1.45-mile stretch of the highway is approximately $100,000. The process would include a traffic study, a state environmental quality review and a demographic analysis. Small businesses exist in the corridor under the current residential zoning designations. Larger businesses, such as Walmart and Price Chopper, have been given site-specific commercial zoning designations. Village board President Vincent Seeley said the zoning update was needed to aid in effective development of the area and to bring more business into the village.
