ICE agents fail to detain two in Hudson

Mar 07, 2019 12:55 am
Amanda Purcell reports in Columbia-Greene Media that agents for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement tried, and failed, to detain two people in Hudson on March 5. Three ICE agents attempted to take away two passengers in a vehicle near the corner of Fifth and Warren streets. The driver of the vehicle, Columbia County Sanctuary Movement Executive Director Bryan MacCormack, and several citizens on the scene did not allow the ICE agents to enter the vehicle without a warrant signed by a judge. The ICE agents left 10 minutes later. “During an attempted targeted enforcement action March 5, in which ICE deportation officers specifically sought two unlawfully present foreign nationals, an individual interfered with the enforcement action, causing officers to instead depart the scene to avoid further disruption,” according to a statement from ICE. Hudson police were called to the scene, but did not interfere. “From my understanding and the information I have been provided, it would appear that the HPD were following guidelines established by the Welcoming and Inclusive City resolution by the Common Council in March 2017,” Hudson Mayor Rick Rector said the next day. “The Hudson Police were never directly involved in any ICE activity other than monitoring the situation from a distance to insure the safety of our community.” Read the full story in Columbia-Greene Media.
