Lauren Stanforth reports for the Albany Times Union that the Albany County jail has made double its usual revenue this year from housing outside inmates. County taxpayers are getting $8.1 million this year from borders, and more than half of that comes from holding federal immigration detainees at the county jail. The 1,040-bed facility is often half empty, but this summer held more than 300 detainees from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at $119 per day, per person. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says now ICE is holding about 100 people in Albany County. Democrats are claiming the extra income from the jail and higher-than-expected sales tax revenues will be going back to taxpayers. Albany County Legislature's Democratic majority released a press release last week saying that $6 million in projected increases will go to reduce property taxes by 4.3 percent. "The County has seen an unprecedented increase in its revenues," the majority's press release said, claiming that will go to, "help[ing] to lower the tax levy, and provide immigrants with legal and other services."
