Judge pauses Rensselaer County effort to block undocumented immigrants applications for driver's licenses

Oct 08, 2019 3:12 pm
David Lombardo reports in the Albany Times Union that U.S District Senior Judge Gary L. Sharpe issued an order this week putting a temporary pause on Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola's move to block a state law allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses. Rensselaer County will have to wait their turn, as Sharpe ordered a stay of the case until a similar case filed about two weeks earlier in Erie County is heard later this month. If the law stands up in court, it would begin in December. The judge will hear from lawyers again in the Rensselaer County case Nov. 1 if the Erie County case does not end first.
