Lawyer groups make voting reform a legislative priority

Jan 08, 2019 2:45 pm
Dan M. Clark is reporting for the New York Law Journal the New York State Bar Association and New York City Bar Association have made voting reforms, like early voting and same-day registration, among their top priorities for state lawmakers during the new legislative session. Voting reform, as supported by the City Bar, would largely overhaul the state’s election system and open voting opportunities for people who may currently feel disenfranchised. Early voting, for example, would enable people to cast their ballots before Election Day. They also support “no excuse” absentee voting, as well as same-day voter and party registration on Election Day, among other reforms. The State Bar wants to see lawmakers approve pre-registration of 16- and 17-year-olds, which would place them on the rolls ahead of the first election in which they are eligible to vote. Other priorities for the City Bar include a push for the passage of the Reproductive Health Act and the Gender Expression Nondiscrimination Act. It also supports the elimination of cash bail for misdemeanor and nonviolent felony charges. The State Bar Association has also put discovery reform and increased funding for civil legal services on its list of priorities for the year. Read the full story in the New York Law Journal.
