Sanders calls for Indian Point closure

Apr 06, 2016 6:30 am

The Mid-Hudson News Network is reporting Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said Mon., Apr. 4, the Indian Point nuclear power plant should be shut down “in a safe and responsible way.” The United States must transform its energy system “away from nuclear power and fossil fuels and towards energy efficiency and renewable energies like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass which will provide safe and clean energy and create millions of good-paying jobs,” The pro-Indian Point group, New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance, disputed Sanders’ contentions. The group's spokesman said Indian Point has a history of safely producing electricity, and if Indian Point were shuttered, "...our carbon emissions would spike, and hard-working New Yorkers would pay a lot more for electricity.” Sanders' comments were made a week after the discovery of missing or decaying bolts and recent water leaks at the Buchanan facility. Buchanan is located in the town of Cortlandt in Westchester County, approximately 80 miles south of Catskill. Read the full story in The Daily Freeman.
