Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail Catskill Central School District students will pay one nickel more for their school lunches in the fall. The Catskill Board of Education approved the increase at its meeting Mon., June 24. Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Farrell said, “We’re very sorry that we have to pass on this five-cent increase to our students and community members, but we are required to do this by federal regulation, or lose our free-and-reduced school nutrition funding.” The federal government sets a reimbursement rate per meal, and any district with a meal price below that amount must raise its cost a minimum of one nickel each year, or suffer fiscal repercussions. Beginning in September, elementary lunches in the Catskill district will cost $1.60; students at the middle and high schools will be charged $1.85. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
