Raymond Pignone is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media six candidates will face-off on Election Day to fill three unexpired terms on the Prattsville Town Board. Republican Greg T. Cross and Democrat James A. Young are competing for a one-year term as town supervisor. Democrat John D. Maynard and Republican Crystal M. Soule Cornell are looking to win a three-year term on the town board, while Democrat Nancy A. Barton and Republican Roxanne L. Mattice are vying for a one-year term. Democrat Barton, 63, has lived in Prattsville for 20 years. She is the director of the Prattsville Art Center and a professor of art. Barton serves on the Board of Community Action of Greene County. She is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts. When asked to define the main issue facing the community, Barton said, “...I believe it is important to preserve the beauty of Prattsville’s natural landscape and its historic legacy, while supporting local businesses and developing good jobs. I believe we should seek to create opportunities for youth to remain in our region,..." Barton believes she would make a good elected official "...because I truly care about the community of Prattsville, and because I have skills and experience that will help us plan together for the future. ..." Republican Mattice, 44, lives in Prattsville and works as a library technology assistant. Mattice said the top issue facing the town of Prattsville is “...not looking at the future. The community seems to have lost its kindness to each other, no matter your political party.” If elected, Mattice said, “I am looking forward to working with the town board members but most of all the community to get the town of Prattsville back on track at leaving the past in the past and looking at all the great things the future has in store for the town of Prattsville.” Democrat Young, 65, lives in Prattsville and is a lifelong resident of Greene County. He is the manager of Young’s General Store in Catskill. He served as Prattsville fire commissioner for five years. Young holds a bachelor of arts degree from SUNY Cobleskill. As for issues, he says there are several. The "...town highway garage, Hughes Energy, swimming at Barrier Dam, [a] gas station in town, [a] Health Center." The answer to these issues, he said, is leadership is key, and he would draw information from a coalition of involved residents. “My background has been one of retail and customer service for over 50 years. The strength and leadership that I have shown with not only customers but also dozens of employees is exactly what our town needs," Young said.
