Refrigerated trailer in Ulster County waits for COVID-19 deaths

Dec 31, 2020 6:33 am
Mike Stribl reports at The Daily Freeman the grimmest of all COVID-19 news: there is a refrigerated trailer on the grounds of Wiltwyck Cemetery in Kingston, in Ulster County. The trailer is there in case the number of dead bodies is too much for local morgues and funeral homes to handle. "The refrigerated container is available for temporary use by our on-site crematory, area funeral directors, and medical examiners offices in the event COVID-related deaths exceed local or regional capacity. To date, this additional capacity has not been required and has not been utilized," Wiltwyck Superintendent Matthew Sirni said in a statement. Ulster County Assistant Deputy Executive Daniel Torres said the trailer was first brought out during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring, and again during the summer, and again last month. It is a sign of just how bad the local coronavirus situation is currently. Greene County reported 53 new coronavirus cases on Dec. 30. The state webtracker reported Dec. 30 13 more COVID-19 cases in Columbia County. Dutchess County reported 149 new cases. Ulster County had 74 more positive tests, and two more deaths. Rensselaer County had 118 cases, and Albany County reported 221 positive tests.
