Coeymans continues pursuit of internet service for all

May 29, 2020 12:30 pm
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media the Coeymans Town Board continues its pursuit of high-speed internet for residents. Town board member Brandon LeFevre is leading the effort and he continues to ask that anyone without access to broadband service complete a brief survey to give town officials an accurate picture of internet access community-wide. So far, fewer than 20 residents have participated. “I have made calls and sent emails looking to get broadband for all of our residents who need it, without success,” LeFevre said. Among the residents who have responded, their experiences varied, with companies quoting fees ranging from a $149 connection fee to $102,000 to run a cable. LeFevre has been in touch with U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko and Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy to ask for help. Another town board member has suggested the board invite representatives from State Telephone, Mid-Hudson Cable and Spectrum for a conversation about what can be done to expand access. “I feel it is important that we continue to aggressively pursue internet for our residents that do not have access, especially since our national medical advisers are predicting a second wave of COVID in the fall/winter," LeFevre said. He noted a second wave of the virus will likely include additional school closings, making it essential that teachers, students and other residents have access to the internet at home.
