Cohoes council votes unanimously for one-year foam burning ban

Apr 29, 2020 5:45 am
Kenneth C. Crowe II is reporting for the Times Union the Cohoes Common Council Tue., Apr. 28, unanimously approved a one-year moratorium, effective May 1, on the burning of firefighting foam that contains potentially hazardous PFAS compounds. The board's decision effectively prevents Norlite from restarting the incineration process that it used to fuel part of its operations. The moratorium comes one day after a study was released by Bennington College that found unusually high amounts of PFAS compounds in the soil and water downwind from the Norlite facility. The moratorium came as city officials moved to halt the burning of the foam until the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the state Department of Environmental Conservation and/or other interested parties can recommend the burning does not have a detrimental impact on the health of city residents. The city received more than 250 emails in support of the moratorium, Mayor Bill Keeler said. The council meeting was held via a telephone conference call due to the coronavirus pandemic Those residents who called during the meeting spoke in favor of the moratorium.
