Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup American Legion Post 983 has announced its opposition to the Cairo Chamber of Commerce's plans to renovate the historic Soldier's Fountain on Main Street. Built in 1922, the fountain contains a bronze memorial tablet with the names of 44 World War I veterans from Cairo. The town owns the fountain and the town board previously agreed to the chamber's plans. “This is a World War I monument and should remain only a WWI monument,” Post 983 of Cairo Commander Michael Adrian and Vice Commander Raymond Houghtaling wrote in a June 10 letter to town officials. “Over the years work has been done on this war memorial without any input from the American Legion Post,” Adrian and Houghtaling wrote. “We realize that the fountain is town property, but it being a war memorial and the fact that the majority of the veterans named on the monument were instrumental in forming the American Legion in the town of Cairo, we believe the American Legion Post should have some say in any changes to this historic monument. ... We are therefore opposed to the Chamber of Commerce plan...” they wrote. The chamber’s project involves selling stone pavers with a veteran’s name, branch of service and wartime designation. The pavers are to be installed around the fountain. The chamber has been selling pavers for months. Cairo Town Supervisor John Coyne said both the Legion and the chamber will be invited to attend the August 2 town board meeting to further discuss the issue.
