Schodack couple lament Amazon arrival
Aug 08, 2019 12:37 am
Larry Rulison reports in the Albany Times Union that George and Rose Brehm have lived for 61 years off North Hillcrest Road in Schodack in Rensselaer County. Now, they are suddenly next to a 115-acre empty lot, clear cut with the tree trunks piled on their property line near their house, and a new view of Interstate 90 in the distance. That's because Amazon is building a one-million-square-foot warehouse distribution center off Route 9. They are promising millions of dollars in property tax revenue and 800 new jobs. But that's cold comfort for the Brehms. "My husband built this house," Rose said. "He really doesn't want to leave. It's sad." She says she has called Schodack Town Supervisor David Harris to invite him for a site visit, but she said Harris never called her back. He did not call the newspaper back either, with a comment.
