William J. Kemble is reporting for the Daily Freeman the ballot count is now complete and Kyle Van DeWater is the apparent winner over Ola Hawatmeh in the Republican 19th Congressional District primary. With results from all 11 counties reporting, Van DeWater prevailed over Hawatmeh by more than 2,200 votes; however, the results are not official until they are certified. Van DeWater will face Democrat incumbent Antonio Delgado in November. The GOP results included votes cast in person on June 23, and during the early voting period; as well as the large number of absentee ballots cast due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Delaware, Sullivan and Montgomery counties were the last to report results. Van DeWater carried eight of the 11 counties in the district, including Columbia, Greene, Dutchess and Ulster counties. Hawatmeh, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, echoed his attacks on mail-in voting in a July 5 opinion piece posted on the "American Greatness" website. Hawatmeh wrote that she was "patient zero of the virus of deadly electoral fraud that will sweep the nation if widespread mail-in voting becomes the norm.” Much of her piece consisted of a letter Hawatmeh sent to U.S. Attorney General Barr, requesting that he investigate mail-in voting, without citing any evidence or examples of fraud.
