Central Hudson warns of customer scams
Jan 10, 2019 1:00 pm
The Daily Freeman is reporting customers of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. is warning its customers of bogus calls threatening to disconnect utility services unless payment is made immediately using a purchased prepaid card. The fraudulent calls appear to be from Central Hudson, using the utility’s caller ID phone number. Officials warn that Central Hudson would never request payment in that way. Other potential scams: Scammers provide a phony account routing number to pay utility bills, receive a credit, or obtain federal assistance; payment is demanded to replace or install a utility-related device or meter; or, a customer is told they have overpaid a utility bill, and the caller requests personal bank account information or a credit card number as a way to facilitate a refund that never comes.
