Catskill doctor sentenced in opioid prescription scam
Mar 08, 2020 11:34 pm
Johan Sheridan reports for News10 in Albany that a Catskill doctor was sentenced to 54 months in prison and three years of supervised release on March 6 for writing bogus prescriptions for painkillers to third parties. Dr. Myra Mabry, a 50-year-old OB-GYN, agreed to a plea deal last August. Mabry also surrendered her license to practice medicine. Her case is only one of many doctors prescribing too many opioids locally. According to data from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, in Greene County an average of 40.1 pills per person per year were prescribed between 2006 to 2012. "The whole thing is shocking; every aspect of it is shocking," said John Coppola, the executive director of the state's Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers, about the massive number of prescriptions locally. "You fundamentally have to come to the conclusion that this is not about bad people who are sneaking out in the woods and stuffing a bunch of meds in their mouth. This is about people who were prescribed into addiction, prescribed into overdose." Read more about this story at the News10 website.
