Jeanette Wolfberg reports in The Columbia Paper that the Hudson Housing Authority Board of Commissioners meeting outlined their plans for new housing at a January 9 meeting. The Authority wants to build State Street Apartments across from Bliss Towers, with a building with 33 apartments for senior citizens with low incomes, and another with 40 apartments for “families” with moderate incomes. The Authority also oversees 120 apartments in Bliss Tower, and 15 in the Columbia Apartments in Hudson. Because of widespread discussion locally, Tim Mattice, executive director of the HHA, had to say at the meeting that, “Bliss Towers will always be maintained as public housing. It will not be sold, demolished, or converted to market rate housing.” Don Moore, former Common Council president and county supervisor, was critical of the plan. “This is not housing for Hudson; it’s housing in Hudson,” he said. Alan Weaver, chairman of the HHA Board of Commissioners, responded: “Then why aren’t you concerned about people moving here from New York City and buying $700,000 houses? We have a mission to fulfill. What about people who work in Staples and Walmart? They need a place to live. Low income housing does contribute to the city.
