Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media on the effort underway by a group of Catskill residents and village trustees to find a new home for the Catskill Community Center. The building that houses the center is located on Main Street in the village and is currently on the market for $1.5 million. The center's board of directors cited a lack of funding as the reason behind the sale. It is now exploring options for identifying a new location, offering a limited set of programs at a variety of locations or stop providing programming directly and instead establish an endowment to fund programs within the community. Amanda Herzog is a proponent of moving the center to Elliot Park, on Broom Street, located on the other side of the Catskill Creek from its current location. “...To better serve our community, I personally think it should moved to another area, ...” she said. It’s important that the proposed new center offer programming for all ages and meet the needs of all the hamlets of Catskill, Herzog said. The Community Center Revisioning Group made a site visit to Elliott Park last week, Village President Vincent Seeley said. Seeley wants to construct a new building at the cost of $1 million with an operating budget of $200,000 to $300,000 per year. The Community Center currently maintains its 13,000-square-foot building and a 15-person staff for less than $200,000, board of directors President Jeff Friedman said last month.
