Report: Cuomo privately against IDs for undocumented New Yorkers

Mar 04, 2019 12:45 am
There is lots of talk around New York about allowing undocumented New York residents to get their own driver’s licenses. On March 2 in Orange County, 200 residents showed up to urge lawmakers to pass a bill on the issue, the Mid-Hudson News Network reports. Two Ulster County-based Democrats, State Sen. Jen Metzger and state Assemblyperson Kevin Cahill, were there and said they support the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, a law similar to the acts passed in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Vermont, and Washington, and the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. A representative for Gov. Andrew Cuomo publicly said last year that Cuomo backs such a measure, but Ross Barkan reports in Gothamist that Cuomo, "is privately working against the bill, according to three sources... who requested anonymity out of fear of retribution from the governor's office." Barkan's sources say Cuomo has called six Democratic state senators who unseated Republicans last November and warned that the legislation would damage them politically. Cuomo spokesperson Tyrone Stevens said the idea that Cuomo is calling legislators to lobby against his public position "black helicopter theories" and that "Governor Cuomo has supported providing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants since 2007."
