Charter completes Spectrum upgrades in Columbia Co.

Jul 25, 2018 7:15 am
Larry Rulison is reporting in the Times Union Charter Communications has completed a $15 million project to bring its Spectrum high-speed internet and phone service to eastern Columbia County, in addition to upgrades to its Spectrum cable TV services in an area from Chatham and New Lebanon down to Ancram. The project was a requirement under Charter's $65 million acquisition of Time Warner Cable in 2016. Although Time Warner Cable did not serve that part of the county at the time, Charter agreed to make the upgrades in one of only two small areas of the state that Charter previously had upstate customers. The other was in Plattsburgh. The new Spectrum service has speeds of 100 megabits per second just like the rest of Charter's upstate territory. The upgrades were completed five months ahead of schedule. Charter stands accused by the state Public Service Commission of misleading both the commission and the public on plans to bring high-speed internet service to 145,000 unserved customers located throughout New York. But the additional addresses that Charter built its network to in Columbia County do not count toward the 145,000 customer requirement under its agreement with the PSC. It is unclear exactly how many homes Charter built out to in Columbia County. The Spectrum cable TV enhancements countywide include 200 HD channels and 18,000 on-demand titles.
