Tan Dun named dean of Bard music conservatory

The Daily Freeman is reporting composer and conductor Tan Dun has been appointed dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music. His tenure begins July 1, 2019. Tan is best known for his scores for the movies "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Hero," as well as composing music for the medal ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His repertoire includes classical music, multimedia performance and Eastern and Western traditions. He has won numerous awards for his work, including an Oscar, a Grammy and a BAFTA award. Tan currently resides in New York City, but was born and raised in a rural Hunan village in the People's Republic of China. As dean, Tan will "guide the conservatory in fulfilling its mission of teaching young musicians both new music and music history," according to a press release.
