School budgets sail to approval

May 17, 2017 6:45 am

The Times Union is reporting voters throughout the Capital Region overwhelmingly approved public school budgets Tue., May 16. Local tax levies will increase on average 1.7 percent in the Capital Region and 1.6 percent in Greene and Columbia counties. The tax fluctuations will vary from a 2.91 percent levy increase in the Hudson City School District, to a 1.18 percent cut in the New Lebanon Central School District. All vacant seats on school boards in both counties were filled, including two write-in contests in Germantown and New Lebanon. Propositions for major capital projects, bus purchases and the establishment of capital reserve funds passed, as well. Turnout was poor, however. Fewer than 1,000 people voted on the budget propositions in each of the 12 school districts in Greene and Columbia counties. All but the Hunter-Tannersville school district had reported results as of 11 p.m., Tuesday. Read the local election results in the Register-Star and The Daily Mail.
