Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that two months after first publicly acknowledging that the town's drinking water is poisoned with the forever chemical PFOS, Cairo officials still have not taken any specific action on the issue. They have asked questions and asked for more water tests, but have done nothing about the quality of the water at the elementary school on Main St., or how much poison is in the coffee at Cairo's two donut shops. At the March 2 Cairo Town Board meeting they talked about joining other municipalities across the nation in suing the makers of a contaminant known as PFAS. The PFAS, or per- and polyfluroalkyl substances, form a group of contaminants, including PFOA and PFOS, that accumulate in the human body and cause cancer and thyroid problems. Firefighting foam was used for many years at a training center near Cairo's town water well in the Angelo Canna Park. “This is something you want to get out of water,” Paul Napoli, an attorney, said at the meeting. “You don’t want to drink it.” The companies that manufactured the chemical have known about the danger to humans since the 1970s. New York State's Department of Health has proposed a 10 parts per trillion limit for PFOS in water, and Cairo's has tested both above and below that mark.
