Millions earmarked for Greene Co. in federal COVID relief package

Feb 24, 2021 4:00 pm

Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup the House Budget Committee February 22, approved President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. The American Rescue Plan contains an estimated $438 million in direct federal funding for counties, towns and villages in the 19th Congressional District. This includes all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties. Greene County is eligible for an estimated $9 million. Towns within the county are looking at a total of about $8.7 million, while the county’s villages are likely to receive just under $1.7 million. “The devil is in the details as to what we will be able to use it for,” said Greene County Legislative Chair Pat Linger, who spoke with Delgado in early February. “Keeping my fingers crossed it's unrestricted,” Linger said. Most local towns and village have carried some expense related to the pandemic, such as modifying offices, installing plexiglass or dividers, and purchasing personal protective equipment. Many local governments also received, or are slated to receive, less state aid than in previous years. However, these costs and revenue reductions are much less than what they are earmarked to receive in the federal relief bill. The bill will head to the House floor later this week and, if approved, will go to the Senate where it is expected to face opposition from Republicans. Aid earmarked for Greene County towns and villages includes: $728,500 for the town of Athens; $296,200 for the village of Athens; $1,190.000 for the town Cairo; $2,100,000 for the town of Catskill; $707,000 for the village of Catskill; $1,568,000 for the town Coxsackie; $493,400 for the village of Coxsackie. “Getting federal COVID-19 dollars in the hands of local governments has been and will continue to be my top priority. I won't stop fighting until this package passes the House, Senate, and is signed into law by the president,” Delgado said.
