• Ariél Zangla reports in the Daily Freeman that though he has not held a single traditional town hall meeting in his first term as 19th Congressional representative, Republican John Faso wants to hold "several debates" with Democrat Antonio Delgado before the Nov. 6 election. Faso sent a letter to all five other candidates in the election. Besides Faso, from Kinderhook, and Delgado of Rhinebeck, there are Green Party candidate Steve Greenfield of New Paltz, and independents Dal LaMagna of Clinton, Diane Neal of Hurley, and Luisa Parker of Callicoon also running. “I believe it’s critical that the voters of the 19th District know exactly where all of the candidates who have qualified for the ballot stand on issues facing our district and our country,” Faso said. “As such, I have written to them all and challenged them to debate.” On a proprietary social media website Delgado said he looked forward to the debates but then criticized Faso for caring more about sending out letters than doing actual legislative work. “A reminder that holding town halls and listening to the folks here are both better ways to engage than sending a letter,” Delgado wrote. “I look forward to discussing health care, jobs, education, the environment and lots of other issues I’ve talked about with folks here in #NY19.” Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
• Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the state Board of Elections ruled August 9, the petitions submitted by independent 19th Congressional District candidate Luisa Park of Callicoon, were invalid. Parker announced her candidacy in March, and was running on her own line called Making the Impossible Possible. The state Board of Elections considered specific objections filed by Rhinebeck Democratic Committee member Rima Liscum and concluded that Parker's campaign had not filed a sufficient number of signatures to be on the ballot. The Rhinebeck Democrats are supporting Democrat Antonio Delgado of Rhinebeck in the contest. Parker has three days to appeal the board’s decision. The other 19th Congressional District independent candidates, Diane Neal of Hurley and Dal LaMagna of Rhinebeck, are facing similar challenges from Liscum. “America is a democracy of its people with laws, checks and balances,” said Neal’s mother Colleen Neal, in response to the Parker decision. “If one is going to represent New York 19 then that person must abide by the law. Diane Neal will always work within the law to represent her constituents.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
• Danielle Furfaro reports in The New York Post that the feud between Rep. John Faso (R-Kinderhook) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues. Now Faso is backing legislation that would give the federal government oversight with local infrastructure projects. Really, the Removing Extra Transportation Infrastructure Luxury Expenses Act is a jab at Cuomo, who recently spent $30 million extra on blue and gold tiles inside the Queens-Midtown and Brooklyn-Battery Tunnels. “I’m a strong supporter of spending money on infrastructure, but I’m not a supporter of wasting tax dollars, and that’s what this was,” Faso said, of the colored tile-spending. “Faso always puts partisan politics over representing New Yorkers as his vote to raise taxes on his own constituents shows,” said Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi. “As far as color of tiles, he should walk into his bathroom and look around to see that they use different colors and if he ever looked around in the old and new tunnel he would have noticed they both used two colors.” Read the full story in The New York Post.
• So far, Rep. John Faso, from Kinderhook, isn't saying anything about the Aug. 8 arrest of Rep. Chris Collins, who represents western New York, on securities fraud charges. Representatives for Faso's opponent, Antonio Delgado, are not keeping mum on the issue. “John Faso has consistently favored big corporations and special interests over the needs and concerns of his own constituents. He lied to a woman with a pre-existing condition about protecting her healthcare,” said Delgado for Congress campaign manager Allyson Marcus. “He has taken thousands from dishonest representatives and Washington insiders. Faso should return the $3,000 from Collins immediately in order to finally demonstrate to the people of our district that he won’t benefit from corrupt politicians.” On Aug. 8 Faso was on the Fox Business Channel talking about tariffs.
