Brian Nearing reports in the Albany Times Union that Coeymans officials have delayed a vote on a proposed local air pollution law, and State Senator George Amedore came out in favor of the LafargeHolcim burning tires at its facility across Route 9W from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School. Environmental groups such as Riverkeeper and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, and local environmentalists such as Judith Enck, the former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official, have come out in favor of the proposed local air pollution law. A planned Jan. 10 vote by the town board has been delayed, as the town considers running the proposal past the Albany County Planning Board. Dominic Rigosu, the chairman of that board, said that since the planning board deals with local land use decisions, not air pollution, "I am really not sure why we would be seeing this." Amedore is against the law. "As the State Senator representing the LafargeHolcim facility, I have great appreciation for them as an employer and community partner," Amedore wrote in a letter to town officials about LafargeHolcim. "At a critical juncture when they could have have chosen to leave New York, they showed their commitment to their employees and the community and decided to invest in their new plant here."
