Mountaintop panel focuses on county jail project
Daniel Zuckerman is reporting in The Daily Mail on a public forum held Sun., Mar. 5 in Windham to discuss various aspects of the proposed Greene County Jail project. Approximately 40 people gathered at the Centre Church for the event organized by county legislator Lori Torgersen. She told the group that boarding all incarcerated people permanently would not be a viable solution, and renovation of the existing jail in Catskill would be difficult and costly. "It would require property acquisition to meet the bed size, but to also meet some of the other requirements," Torgersen said. Torgersen wants to look at repeat offenders and determine if they are being well-served by the county. "...if we did a better job and were more effective with those people, [would] we dramatically impact our average daily population by just focusing on maybe a small subset of the population?" Torgersen said. The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session. Audience members asked about a variety of topics, including the possibility of conducting a survey of current jail employees, alternatives to incarceration and if the final vote of the jail would be up to the public or the legislature. The forum was helpful for Torgersen, who said despite the jail not being "a warm and fuzzy subject," she was happy to see a good turnout. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
