New York agrees to limit solitary confinement

Benjamin Weiser is reporting in The New York Times the state of New York has agreed to reforms intended to curtail the widespread use of solitary confinement, including prohibiting its use in disciplining incarcerated people under the age of 18. This move makes New York the largest prison system in the United States to prohibit the use of disciplinary confinement for minors, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union. The NYCLU represented the three individuals whose lawsuits led to the agreement cited in court papers filed Wed., Feb. 19. Under the agreement, corrections officials will also be prohibited from imposing solitary confinement as a disciplinary measure for pregnant women, and the punishment will be limited to 30 days for those who are developmentally disabled.
