DEC prepares response to deer contagion

Nov 07, 2013 6:14 am
Jessica Mosier is reporting in The Daily Mail the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the state Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced emergency regulations to prohibit the importation and spread of Chronic Wasting Disease to susceptible deer statewide. CWD is an untreatable and fatal brain and nervous system disorder that can afflict deer, elk and moose. The emergency regulations ban imports of specific species from Nov. 16, 2013 to Aug. 1, 2018. These species include: Rocky Mountain elk, black-tailed deer, white-tailed deer and moose. The DEC fears an outbreak of CWD in New York would have a significant economic impact statewide. Nationally, 21 states have reported confirmed cases of CWD. A public hearing on the emergency regulations will be held at the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets in Albany, Dec. 19. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
