Nixon supports legalizing marijuana

Shane Goldmacher reports in The New York Times that Cynthia Nixon, challenging Andrew Cuomo for governor in the Democratic primary in September, says she wants to legalize marijuana in New York. “She said that if marijuana is legal, we can tax it and make a lot of money from that,” said Julie Klam, an author who attended a private fundraiser last week where Nixon said she wanted it legal. Cuomo has opposed legalizing recreational marijuana. Cuomo did sign a bill to make medical marijuana legal, but it may be the most restrictive law in the country, with few eligible. Last year Cuomo called it a “gateway drug” and said, “As of this date, I am unconvinced on recreational marijuana.” Nixon's spokesperson declined to comment on the issue.
