Long-time Greene Co. sheriff's investigator passes away
MidHudson News is reporting retired Greene County sheriff’s deputy Raymond Berg of South Cairo died February 1, at the age of 66, succumbing to the long-term effects of Agent Orange. Berg was exposed to the herbicide and defoliant chemical, one of the tactical use Rainbow Herbicides. during his military service in Vietnam. He had served as an Army helicopter crew chief. Berg joined the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a full-time deputy from 1982 until early 2000 when he was promoted to deputy sheriff’s investigator. He also founded and then served as a member of the Greene County Fire Investigation team. Berg retired from the sheriff’s office in May 2001. He also served as a member of the Cairo Police Department from 1980 until 2006. “The entire Greene County Sheriff’s Office expresses its deepest sympathies to Deputy Berg’s family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague,” an agency statement read.
