Ulster term limits proposal on hold

Jul 18, 2018 11:45 am
Patricia R. Doxsey reports in the Daily Freeman that on July 17 Ulster County lawmakers delayed a vote on whether to ask voters about term limits this November, after a controversial outside group backed the measure. Republican Brian Woltman, of Kingston, joined Democrats, some of whom had previously backed the term limit question, voted 13-10 to delay action on the proposal. The conservative organization Reclaim New York recently backed the proposal. Minority Leader Hector Rodriguez, a Democrat from New Paltz, said it was a shame that “an outside group tried to get involved in what was an honest-to-goodness discussion.” Speakers at the July 19 meeting called Reclaim New York “insidious,” “nefarious,” and “synonymous with dark money.” Now county legislators won't vote on putting term limits on the ballot until September. Had they voted in favor this week, the measure would have gone on the ballot this November. Now it won't until at least November 2019, if passed. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
