Hosted by Rob Saffer.

Most languages have words for it. In English, it’s big shot, big wig, or big cheese. In French, it’s gros bonnet. In Italian, it’s pezzo grosso. In Spanish, it’s mandamas. In Yiddish, it’s macher. And in Philadelphian, it’s mahoff. This broadcast will showcase Jazz Mahoffs, overlooked recording artists from Philly (pronounced ‘Phiwy’ by the locals). Host Rob Saffer and guest, jazz archivist and lifelong ‘Phlefian’ Marc Esptein, will feature music by: Byard Lancaster; Ted Curson; Sunny Murray and Odean Pope; Rufus Harley; John Blake and Avery Sharpe; Gloria Galante and Tyrone Brown; Trudy Pitts; Tyrone Hill with Marshall Allen; Jamaaladeen Tacuma; Monette Sudler and Sounds of Liberation; Khan Jamal; Cal Massey; Bobby Zankel; Philadelphia Experiment; Sonic Liberation Front; Orrin Evans and Ralph Peterson Jr.; Dave Burrell and David Murray; Hassan Ali; and Benny Golson and The Philadelphians (or ‘Phlefians’).

After the local news at noon, Overlooked brings listeners overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation.
