Rensselaer County broadens moratorium on solid waste facilities near waterways

Aug 02, 2019 12:56 am
Kenneth C. Crowe II reports in the Albany Times Union that Republicans and Democrats in the Rensselaer County Legislature have agreed to extend a one-year moratorium on solid waste facilities within a mile of the Hudson River to include any area within one mile of a tributary of the Hudson River or a reservoir or drinking water source. Republican Legislature Chairperson Michael Stammel says the amendment should be approved after being introduced to the Legislature at the Aug. 13 meeting. “In light of Hoosick Falls and other situations with water, there’s nothing too big or too small to protect our waterways,” said Democrat Peter Grimm, the Minority Leader in the legislature. The city of Rensselaer approved a BioTech America trash-processing plant at the former BASF site before the moratorium was passed. In Greene County earlier this year there was a proposal for an ash dump near the Hudson River, which was withdrawn. Read more about this story in the Albany Times Union.
