Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk school officials are looking toward reopening the schools and what that might entail. Schools were closed in mid-March in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, and learning activities were moved from the classroom to students' homes. The RCS district closed March 16. Officials are now at work on a plan to reopen in September, but it remains unclear if that will be in-person instruction, remote learning from home, or some combination of the two. In a letter to the school community, District Superintendent Brian Bailey, Ph.D., wrote, “An RCS reopening committee has been meeting since the end of June. This committee is composed of more than 80 leaders, teachers, support staff and parents. Their task has been to examine the best way to deliver instruction, operate safely and support our human resources during this pandemic.” The committee is looking at a plan that will incorporate social distancing and it it unknown if that will mean a return to the classroom. Some of the guidance released by the State Education Department last week includes social distancing, required hand hygiene and the wearing of face masks or coverings. The district is looking to receive additional feedback from the school community on the reopening plans in early August, before a final decision is made.
