Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a state of emergency has been declared in New Baltimore in response to the water main break that occurred last week, Supervisor Jeffery Russo said June 11. The town board issued the declaration June 8, due to concerns for the health and welfare of those who live or work in Water District No. 2, Russo said. The residents of Water District No. 2, also known as the Scheller Park Water District, lost their water service June 2, after a 10-inch main broke. The main lies under the southbound lanes of the state Thruway, Russo said. Callanan Construction of South Bethlehem installed a temporary two-inch water line to restore limited water service late last week, but water pressure is lower than normal and fire hydrants to the area are affected. The installation of a permanent new water main could take several weeks, the supervisor said. The state of emergency will remain in effect for 30 days unless canceled, allowing town officials to take whatever actions are necessary to restore water to the district. The water main in question is owned by the town of New Baltimore, but it is maintained by an agreement with the village of Coxsackie, Coxsackie Mayor Mark Evans said.
