Cohoes letting officer who gave false statements about shooting his gun after confrontation with youth retire without discipline

Robert Gavin reports in the Times Union that a white, off-duty Cohoes police officer fired shots after confronting Black youths in Essex County in early June, then fell asleep after calling 911, and then told a false story to the police that woke him up. Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler is letting Officer Sean T. McKown retire rather than face any disciplinary action, even with McKown admitting his initial story was false, and video evidence showing it was false. The officer appeared highly intoxicated after the incident, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation. Keeler, the mayor, was a State Police officer for more than 30 years. “So if these facts are true, then that would be the desired goal — separation of service,” the mayor said, “and the most certain way to get there, the easiest way to get there, the least expensive way to get there is the retirement route.” The officer is the nephew of former Cohoes Police Chief William Heslin.
