Steve Hughes and Rebecca Carballo report for the Times Union three judges on the Second Circuit Appeals Court ruled Feb. 26 that the U.S. Attorney General's office could block federal grants to cities that declared themselves "sanctuary cities." The opinion reversed a circuit court judge's earlier ruling, and is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court. In 2017, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions blocked sanctuary cities from accessing more than $250 million in grants to local law enforcement. Seven states, including New York, filed a lawsuit saying that was unconstitutional. But now those cities could see some grant funding dry up, including Albany, Hudson, Kingston, and Newburgh. In 2017 Hudson passed the "Resolution Affirming Hudson as a Welcoming and Inclusive City,” which some define as a sanctuary city law, and some do not. Read more about this story in the Times Union.
