Local immigration advocates prepare for ICE raids Sunday

Jul 12, 2019 12:56 am
Mallory Moench reports in the Albany Times Union that a local immigrant advocate group is preparing for nationwide arrests July 14 from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office. On July 11 The New York Times reported that ICE officials would target at least 2,000 undocumented immigrants with deportation orders beginning July 14. Last month, President Donald Trump promised other raids that never occurred. "Our community has faced increased and more aggressive immigration enforcement activities since the beginning of the [Trump] administration and our community has responded with resilience," said Bryan MacCormack, director of Columbia County Sanctuary Movement. "Our organization will continue to expand our know-your-rights and rapid response and organizing programming to support and defend our community." MacCormack has been training others locally to find out whether ICE officers have just an administrative warrant signed by an ICE official or a more powerful judicial warrant signed by a judge. The administrative warrant does not allow ICE officials to enter private property. Columbia County Sanctuary Movement members have a rapid response team that uses a mass text system, assesses how any arrest is conducted, supports the affected family, and locates the individual detained to connect them with legal services. "Although terrifying, it was a positive effect on our motivation to organize Know Your Rights trainings to access that information," MacCormack said.
