Survey documents state's beer boom

NY Upstate [dot] com has ranked New York's counties by number of breweries. The state is now home to more than 400 breweries, which support a $5-billion industry. All but four of New York's 62 counties have at least one brewery; 49 counties have two or more. Greene County tied for 14th place with seven breweries for a total economic impact of $35.6 million; Columbia County was ranked 13th with eight breweries and a total economic impact of $47.6 million. Dutchess and Ulster counties tied for 7th place statewide with 15 breweries each. Suffolk County, Long Island, was ranked first with 36 breweries within its boundaries. Those businesses are credited with a total economic impact of $408 million a year. According to Paul Leone, director of the New York State Brewers Association, breweries have been opening in New York at the rate of about one per week in recent years.
