Brendan J. Lyons reports in the Albany Times Union that Democrats in the State Senate unveiled several proposed laws intended to curb gun violence on Feb. 6. Among the bills: Anyone convicted of low-level hate crimes would be prohibited from buying firearms; bump stock devices such as the one used in the Las Vegas mass shooting would be banned; courts would be allowed to order the seizure of guns from individuals who are at risk of harming themselves or others; background checks for gun sellers would be more in-depth; and the possession of firearms that get by security screening devices would be outlawed. Democrats, while they outnumber Republicans in the State Senate, do not control the legislation there, as a handful of Democrats have joined with the GOP to control the chamber.
